In the age of HGTV and half hour home renovations, we tend to think that home decorating and interior design needs to be done in marathon sessions, with one final sprint toward the finish line. In truth, I rarely decorate my home in that way, designing one room to completion before starting another. I prefer to slowly collect pieces I love over time, finding the perfect spot for them in my home, leading to a more collected feel overall. But that is also why four years after building our house, most of our rooms still aren’t “done.” I don’t know if they ever will be… And I’m starting to think that’s ok.
People usually hire me to design one room at a time, but sometimes my clients work the same way I do. We work on one room for a little while, and then move on to another (or take a break to allow the budget to grow a bit), or sometimes work on multiple rooms at a time. This navy and plum glam master bedroom is a partial reveal for that reason. We worked on it a bit, but have more recently been focusing on other more public areas of the house.
I wanted to share this partially finished navy and plum glam master bedroom for two reasons… First, because I think what we have so far is pretty great. Secondly, I want to help dispel the myth that only fully finished, fully styled rooms are worthy of entering the blogosphere. At least in my humble opinion. From this first shot, the room looks complete. However, this is a really large master bedroom, with a sitting room off to the left side. Currently the sitting room has a sofa and that’s about it. There are also quite a few bare walls left, but instead of rushing to fill them, we are waiting for the right pieces. The completed bedroom will be a fun reveal someday though! The bedroom wall is the main area of the room we focused on, and when you walk in, the navy wall with the canopy bed, white Anthropologie bedding, Pottery Barn chandelier, and pops of plum make a bold, yet elegant statement.
The navy is masculine, but the plum, mixed metal accents, and mirrored nightstands are decidedly feminine, giving great balance to the room.
The nightstand styling is simple, so as not to block or compete with the gorgeous view of the outdoors.
The antique brass chandelier from Pottery Barn has a timeless yet glam feel that is perfect for this space. The details are just so pretty! The white floral textured art was a Home Goods find. It really stands out against the navy wall, and the simplicity keeps the space feeling elegant, allowing us to use a vibrant accent color like plum without losing sophistication.
White cotton curtains from Ikea filter the light as they hit the head of the bed and give off a bit of a dreamy feel. I can imagine this is a pretty great way to wake up!
That’s it for now, but I’m sure I’ll be revealing more of this navy and plum glam master bedroom in the future. What do you think? Are you OK with a partially finished room? I’d love to hear what you think!

Whoa! I love those colors together! So dramatic but the room still seems so relaxing. Beautiful job!
Thank you so much!!
Wow Kristen this room is gorgeous! Hard to believe it’s not finished! That chandelier is amazing! I’m excited to see what else you do!
Thanks, Kelly! The one wall pictured is pretty much done, it’s the rest of the room that needs some finishing touches!
