One Room Challenge – Week 4 (Proposed Budget)

One Room Challenge Master Bedroom Makeover: Week 4; Beachy Glam Jewel Tone Master Bedroom on a Budget; Proposed Budget Breakdown

If you’ve been following along, you know I’m participating in the One Room Challenge, in which design bloggers renovate/makeover an entire room in six (but it’s really five) weeks. Linda from Calling It Home and House Beautiful host this amazing event. This is the part where I’m supposed to update you on last week’s progress. Which to be honest, is not much. We were out of town for the wedding of some super close friends for four days, and along with some other business commitments, it just didn’t leave a lot of time for decorating.

Just had to throw in a quick picture, because our entire family of four was all a part of the wedding, and when are we ever all dressed up together?! It was seriously sooo much fun to celebrate the special day of people we love so much!

For the first time ever, Linda at Calling It Home has decided to extend the One Room Challenge by an extra week, due to all of the natural disasters people in various parts of the world have been dealing with. Much more major renovations than mine are behind for reasons genuinely out of the control of the bloggers. Even though I haven’t personally been affected by those disasters, I love the sentiment of solidarity it creates to postpone the reveals for a week. And frankly, I can totally use the extra time too.

Since the progress I’ve made is fairly unimpressive, I thought I’d update you on the budget situation.

As I mentioned here, I didn’t really plan too far ahead of time to participate in this challenge, which means I didn’t set money aside for it. Adam and I keep a close watch on our budget, especially since sending our two kiddos to their sweet little private Christian school is one of our main financial priorities. Which means I am doing this entire makeover on a pretty tiny budget. It helps that I already had a lot of the bigger pieces.

For those of you not interested in decorating on a budget, feel free to skip down to where you can see my tiny bit of progress.

Luckily, some of the bigger items, like the nightstands and the dresser had already been purchased, and we’re keeping our Anthropologie bedding and our massive four poster bed, so they aren’t taking current funds out of pocket. I added the paint sprayer to the bottom of the list, but I’m not including it in the total room budget, because this is not the only project I will use it for. So my total proposed budget for this makeover is $716.

One of my major progress points this week is that I sold a bunch of furniture. Our old coffee table, our black dresser and nightstands, and Adam’s old desk from when he worked from home have all left the building. Plus I sold a couple of random things I had laying around on ebay, which helped my decluttering efforts, and also brought my grand total of bedroom funds to $650, just $66 less than my proposed One Room Challenge budget. If I can stick to my budget and sell a couple of other items, I won’t have any out of pocket expense for this room makeover. And for a budget decor loving girl like myself, that’s pretty exciting.

As far as actual design progress, prepare to be underwhelmed!

I tested out the Behr Diva Glam paint sample I purchased from Home Depot on the inside of one of my nightstands. I think it’s a go. For a brief moment I considered doing a softer pink, almost a blush, but then I realized that I was being influenced by trends, that it totally didn’t work as well with my plan for the room, and that I’d probably be over the color by next year when the trend moves out… Fuchsia, on the other hand, has been one of my forever loves. I won’t get sick of this pink. And I LOVE how it looks against the black wall.

I started assembling my first nightstand. As usual, it took WAY longer than expected, and I’m nowhere near done. You won’t see a wider angle picture including my walls at this point, because the stuff that used to be contained in my old nightstands has now spilled out into ugly piles lining said walls…

I do love the width and height of the new nightstands, but I wish they were a bit deeper. And the drawers are sort of flimsy, so I won’t be shoving them full of books like I did with my old ones. But maybe that’s a blessing in disguise. It will force me to be more organized. At least that’s the theory, right? 😉

The only other real news is that I found two throw blankets that might work to cover the bench with. I’m leaning toward the cream, but the pop of color in the blue is sort of fun…

  1. Hi Kristen. Lovely photo of your family 🙂 I laughed when you mentioned not following the trend by switching your paint color choice because I thought of using blush in my space too, but quickly changed to my normal self – brights…lol. I love your black wall. It looks great with the furniture.
BTW, we got a weeks extension, so reveal day is on November 16th.

    1. Thank you so much! That’s so funny that we had the same thought about the blush… I’ll have to check out your post. Yay for the extra week. I can definitely use it!

    1. It’s one of my favorite colors! Ha, I figure no one really wants to see that… But keeping it real by letting people know it’s there. 😉

  2. Well hello beautiful family AND loving where you are going with the room. TRENDS: they tend to steal your instincts away sometimes. Good for you keeping with your gut. Cant wait to see!

    1. Aw, thanks Jenny! So true that trends can mess with our instincts… I have a pretty strong grasp of “my” style, but sometimes I see something that’s popular and start to second guess!

    1. Thanks, Vanessa! So glad I’m not the only one who didn’t have a very productive ORC week! Good luck to you too!
