If you’ve been hanging around for any length of time, you’ve “heard” me mention a few times that I am a lifelong MN girl who, to put it mildly, doesn’t love MN weather… The summers are gorgeous (and keep me sane), but the other nine months are SO not my jam. And by that, I mean they are COLD. As a lifelong freeze baby, that means I am always looking for new ways to stay warm in cold weather. Other than escaping to Florida, of course.

I have a vivid memory of one winter family celebration at my childhood home with all of my dad’s extended family. I was probably eight or nine, and I could NOT get warm. I had that miserable “my-bones-are-cold” feeling that freeze baby Minnesotans like me are all too familiar with. No one else was cold that night though, so the thermostat stayed put, despite my pleas to turn up the heat.

My mom forced me to put on a thick wool sweater to stay warm. I defrosted a tiny bit, but the sweater was itchy and the wool kept scratching my neck and face. That night is seared in my mind because I was so cold and uncomfortable the whole night, putting a major damper on the festivities. Thankfully, since my inner thermostat seems to keep me a few degrees colder than most people, keeping warm has gotten a lot more comfortable AND fashionable since my childhood!

Live in Layers

One of my favorite ways to stay warm in cold weather is to live in layers. As a mama who is frequently on the run, dressing for comfort is super important to me, so the more comfortable those layers are, the better. But I’ve also realized my day goes better when I feel put together, so I don’t want to look sloppy. I recently discovered Cuddl Duds at Kohls, and oh my goodness, I am a fan! This last Monday, we had an unexpected warm fall day that actually hit 63 degrees! I forced myself and my kiddos outside to soak up the tiny last bit of the year’s warmth. My kids are always asking to use my “fancy camera” and the answer is pretty much always NO, but we had an impromptu photo shoot, and the kids were hilarious. Arabella especially. My daughter is super sensitive to textures (I’ve had to eliminate more than half of her new school clothes this year because of the itch factor), and she was super jealous of the softness and kept rubbing my arm and back. Looks like I’ll be heading to Kohl’s this week to buy her some Cuddl Duds of her own!
