I firmly believe you should decorate your home in a way that feels like YOU and functions well for the way you and your family live. This means I’m not the biggest follower of interior design trends and tend to march to the beat of my own drum. However, I do understand that trends can influence the way we design our homes, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as long as we stay true to our style (and don’t bankrupt ourselves trying to keep up with the interior design trends following Joneses).
Five years ago, I never would have guessed I would fall in love with gold and brass metallics, but after seeing one gorgeous image after another on Pinterest, my design backbone gave out, and it’s safe to say I’m now obsessed. So while certain aspects of my style have always been the same (black and white contrast, colorful, and glam), other areas are continually evolving (how classic vs. modern I’m leaning, what metallics I gravitate to, and different types of accessories).
Some of the predicted interior design trends for 2018 aren’t floating my boat, such as warm neutrals like beige and brown 🙁 or the demise of the all white kitchen (what?! it’s timeless, classic!), but there are quite a few my glam loving heart can completely get on board with.

Velvet
Velvet sofas are everywhere right now, and I can’t get enough of them! I still love my leather chesterfield, but if I had to do it over again, I’d probably pick up a navy velvet instead. While velvet is having a major moment, it’s also pretty timeless, and doubtful to ever go out of style. However, I do love leather for the maintenance with kiddos. Velvet is much harder to get mashed up fruit snacks out of. 😉
If you aren’t ready to commit to a large piece of velvet furniture, a great (and affordable) way to work the rich, textured fabric in is with some throw pillows. That’s my plan, since replacing the sofa isn’t on the agenda right now.

Bold Patterns, Such as Florals and Geometrics
Sometimes it amazes me how much my design style resembles my mom’s. When Adam and I bought our first home, I ran completely in the other direction and went pretty modern and stark, but the house never felt like home. My mom is uber traditional, and the house I grew up in had wallpaper, pillows, and upholstered furniture in floral patterns. I never thought I would consider a floral pattern in my own home, but one of my favorite pillows in my living room is a brightly colored floral. Find similar throw pillows here, here, and here.
I find that I tend to love traditional bones in homes and furniture, mixed with bright colors and more modern art. So not exactly my mama’s style, but SO much closer than I ever thought. I’m swooning over this modern take on a traditional floral wall…
Bold Colors, Including Jewel Tones
Jewel tones are a staple in my world. I’ve been using them for decades (literally!), and I’ll continue decorating with them whether they are in or out… Just try to drag me away!
However, I love the fact that interior design trends forecasts call for them to pop up this year in a big way, because it will make them easier to find and more affordable! Lately I have myself considering jewel tones I’ve previously stayed away from, such as emerald green. How gorgeous is this comforter?! Similar can be found here and here.
Dark Walls
This is a trend I’ve already embraced, as you may remember from my One Room Challenge master bedroom reveal. My headboard wall is painted Soot from Benjamin Moore. It is actually the deepest blue, but reads as black. I just love the color!
My sister in law warned me that painting walls black is addicting, and I’ve found that to be true. I have a second black wall in my office, but that room is a hot mess, so I can’t share any pictures right now. 😉 And deep colored walls don’t necessarily need to be black. For example, this living room painted in Sherwin Williams’ Color of the Year “Oceanside” is absolutely stunning. I’ve actually considered painting my kitchen island the same color…
Wallpaper
I personally don’t think this is a trend new to 2018… IMHO, wallpaper has been having a moment for quite a while, but the experts have mentioned it as one of the interior design trends, so I’m giving it a shout out. One of my favorites is this La Maison Pierre Frey “Arty” Wallpaper… A client is considering it for her mudroom!
I’m obsessed with this Palm Springs inpsired wallpaper, and considered it for our powder room, but Adam quickly nixed that idea. I may need to pick something slightly more neutral to suit his tastes. He is pretty tolerant of all of my pink. Find similar tropical wallpaper here and here.
Plants
This is another area where my style has evolved… To be fair, I have a black thumb, so keeping plants alive is quite the challenge for me, but I never even tried because I always associated them with the tacky faux plants that were so popular in the 80’s. However, if you’ve ever checked out any interiors accounts on instagram recently, you know that plants (real ones) are back in a big way.
I’ve realized having plants in my home perks up my mood the same way fresh flowers do, and they’re a whole lot more affordable. Plus, they purify the air. What’s not to love? I’ve even managed to keep a few of mine alive!
Libraries
My childhood home had a “library,” otherwise known as my dad’s office, with built ins lined with old leather bound books. The coziness and security I felt curled up on the tufted chesterfield settee, watching him working in front of the wall of books, is one of my most vivid childhood memories. As a fellow book lover, having a library of my own someday is on my dream list. I have an entire Pinterest board devoted to them!
Aren’t library ladders dreamy? Since libraries are on the interior design trends list for 2018, I’m anticipating that my Pinterest board will grow this year. I can’t wait to see what gorgeous inspiration pops up!
Bone Inlay
Last, but definitely not least on the list of interior design trends, is bone inlay. This stunning style of furniture is picking up steam in 2018, but also feels like a time honored style that will never be “out.” You can find a smaller but similar dresser for less here.
As stunning as the black and white is, I think I love this blue dresser even more! And for those of you who want to pull a bit of this look into your home without breaking the bank on a large furniture piece, find some great bone inlay accessories here, here, and here.
