No, I am not ahead of schedule and posting my One Room Challenge reveal hours early… I’m actually posting last week’s post a week late! 🙁 Last week was weird. Between daylight savings kicking my booty, waiting on biopsy results for my daughter (benign! Thank you, Jesus!!!), getting a temporary crown put on by a dentist wearing a space suit, and the most contentious and questionable election cycle I’ve seen in my lifetime, I just wasn’t super focused on getting stuff done in Kaden’s room. Add to that some major painting challenges I’ll talk more about in a minute, and I hardly made any progress. So, needless to say, this has been unlike other One Room Challenges I’ve participated in, where I would already have my room photographed and my big reveal post done. However, I’m still thankful that Linda from Calling It Home and Better Homes & Gardens graciously sponsor said challenge. And they’ve extended the challenge for a couple of weeks, so I technically have until November 29 to get my reveal post up.
I’m going to keep this one fairly short and sweet with a quick update and hopefully get back to working on the actual room. Here’s where I’m at:

Just last night, I finished painting the pattern on Kaden’s wall. It’s a little less busy and more free form than the inspiration Kelly Wearstler wallpaper, but overall I really love how it turned out. More importantly than that, Kaden loves it too.
Each wall is unique, and there are a few “mistakes,” which hopefully just adds to the big modern personality of the room.
My other main accomplishments this week were assembling the desktop out of the leftover rock wall plywood and painting that and the bed. The desktop isn’t perfect, but it will be functional, and I did it on the cheap, which always makes me happy.
Painting the bed and desktop was not quite such an enjoyable experience. In general, I enjoy painting, but I usually hit a point where I’m ready to be done. I was feeling pumped after I finished the first coat of paint on the bed!
Everything looked pretty good, and I knew one more quick coat would make everything perfect. Alas, I was wrong. I must have let the paint settle too long and not stirred well enough, because the paint at the bottom of the quart can was a COMPLETELY different color than the rest of the can. As you can see, I discovered this when I only had one board left to paint, which happened about five minutes after I hit the “I just want to be done” point.
Things were supposed to look better after a second coat of paint, not significantly worse! So I drove back to Hirshfield’s and bought another can of paint. By that point in the evening (last Friday), I had to jump onto our online leadership convention, so I picked the paintbrush back up on Saturday morning. I’m not sure if the entire second quart was mixed incorrectly, but it was once again, a completely different color that both the bed and the walls (even though it’s all supposed to be Benjamin Moore Soot). I understand that different formulas can look slightly different, so I didn’t expect the Satin Advance to perfectly match the Ben Eggshell on the walls, but they were nowhere near the same color. The Advance on the bed and desk looked SUPER gray.
Needless to say, I was frustrated that I couldn’t finish this project until Monday, when I went back to the paint store again, and had a bunch of black added back into the new quart. It still didn’t turn out quite as black as I hoped (or expected), but I need to move on, and Kaden said it’s fine, so we’re living with it. Below you can see the color difference when I started painting the final color over the grayer color.
To make matters worse, today while carrying a mattress into the room, I knocked over my ladder (with the desktop leaning against it), and it came crashing down into the window sill and took big chunks out of the casing. Nothing like making even more work for myself.
I’ll get this thing done eventually! And here is where I’m at now…
I’m hoping to wrap this space up in the next week, especially since we’re heading out of town for Thanksgiving! Remember to check out past weeks and the other designer’s reveals!
