It seems a little funny to be revealing rooms in our old house now that we are in the new, but before we moved and while we were building, things got so crazy that I didn’t get a chance to post these before. Kaden’s room was one of the first I did at our old house, but I never really got around to finishing it before he felt like he outgrew superheroes. I promised to eventually change it up, but then we moved. I’m currently planning Arabella’s room for the One Room Challenge (which was recently postponed due to Coronavirus), but the very next room I plan to tackle is Kaden’s room here at the new house. He’s getting a lot of input this time around, and you can expect it to be mostly modern. He absolutely loves modern design! This will be a pretty quick post, but here is his rustic superhero boys bedroom from our last house.

One mistake I made in our last house that I didn’t repeat here is those horrible boob lights! We didn’t have the option to get anything different, and I could have changed them out later, but I was completely intimidated at the thought of trying it myself, and I didn’t want to pay a small fortune paying an electrician to change each room as we went. So they stayed. If you can ignore that awful light, his room was done-ish.
The bunk beds were a gift from the kids’ preschool teacher. We just loved her! About a year after Kaden was in her class, we ran into her at Costco and Kaden told her about the really cool wood bunk beds in another area of the store that he was hoping I’d buy him. I told her that I wouldn’t be spending $900 on bunk beds when he had a perfectly decent white “big boy” bed. She mentioned that she was getting rid of some bunk beds and offered them to us. The rest is history.
They were white metal when we got them, so I bought a bunch of Rustoleum primer and metallic bronze hammered spray paint and gave them a quick makeover.
The dual purpose nightstand/Lego storage is the Honey Can Do Rolling Storage Cart from Amazon, and if Kaden didn’t have about 5 times more Legos than it can hold, it would be the Lego perfect storage system.
The white dresser was from Kaden’s original Sorelle Vista baby furniture set we purchased at Buy Buy Baby when I was about three months pregnant with him. Because he knew that, he kept saying he was too old for it, so we got rid of it when we moved. Little did I know when he kept saying that that he just really likes modern furniture with super clean lines.
The wood American flag was a World Market purchase for Adam’s office, but when he temporarily transitioned into a work from home job, I swiped it for Kaden’s room. The military Lego kit was a gift from Grandpa after spending the day at Brickmania in Minneapolis. Let me tell you, I had no idea what can actually be built with Legos. It was incredible!
Kaden is a huge reader and has reread the Harry Potter series at least three of four times. I stacked a few of them up here because they worked with the color scheme. 😉
The tin superhero signs were ebay finds, and they have a fun vintage feel to them.
The bedding is discontinued Pottery Barn Kids Madras in Brown/Blue that I purchased right when Kaden got his “big boy bed” at 2.5. When we got the bunk beds, I wanted to buy new bedding and go in a different direction for Kaden’s room, but his personality is a little resistant to change, and he just REALLY wanted to keep his same bedding. So I scoured eBay until I found the same comforter listed for sale to give him what he wanted. I’ve found that designing my kids’ rooms has always been finding a balance between what I want and what they want, but since I get the entire rest of the house, I tend to lean more toward honoring their requests, when possible. Overall, this rustic superhero boys bedroom turned out to be a happy medium, not too “kiddish,” but also still fun.
The pillows were cheapies I found on eBay. The fabric is pretty rough, so they aren’t snuggly pillows, but they had the look we were going for.
I found the blanket at the end of the bed at Costco, of all places. That’s not exactly the first place I go to look for home decor, but these blankets are SO soft and my son is obsessed with them. He had a buddy spending the night the day I bought them and they both absolutely loved them!
This play table is a Pottery Barn Kids one I purchased second hand off Craigslist (before FB Marketplace even existed) for $100. Similar can be found here. $100 is a fraction of the price of a new one, although it was pretty scratched up already. I wasn’t too worried about it because I figured I could always paint it if necessary, but when Kaden was little, he just used it for wooden train sets, so there didn’t seem to be any reason to, and then I just never got around to it as he got older and less prone to slam things into it. It also served as a great Lego table and is currently functioning as an entertainment center in the bonus room over the garage.
It’s fun looking back on Kaden’s rustic superhero boys bedroom in our old house, but I’m even more excited about the plans we have for his new room… Both what I love in design and what he gravitates to have changed, so it’s going to have a very different feel! How about you? Has your style stayed the same, or does it evolve with time?
