Heather and Ryan have a super sweet family, with three beautiful kiddos, the youngest who happens to be one of my son’s best buddies from school.
When Heather asked me to decorate their “playroom,” basically a nearly empty bonus room above their garage, I knew it would be more of a lounge and TV space, since their tweenage kids are past the baskets full of toys everywhere stage.
We were starting almost completely from scratch, as the only piece of furniture they planned to use for the space was a Hemnes TV stand from Ikea.
Heather and Ryan love modern decor with a touch of industrial rustic thrown in. They tend to gravitate more toward clean lines and neutral colors, but wanted to bring in some fun pops of color to give the space a youthful feel. They threw out the idea of a graffiti wall, and I relished the challenge of making that work with their design aesthetic.
After discussing a few options, we built the room around a mostly black and white mural from Murals Wallpaper that still has some vibrant color thrown in to liven up the room.
I pulled the teal, fuchsia, and yellow out of the mural wall to use as accents throughout the rest of the room, focusing primarily on the teal.
I found these gorgeous children’s classics books at Goodwill. The dust jackets were beat up, but hiding underneath them were vibrant, beautiful covers that work perfectly with the colors of this playroom.
A favorite feature of this room is customizing the graffiti wall to include the kids’ names.
Because the graffiti wall makes such a statement, we kept the rest of the room pretty simple, with clean modern Ikea Ribba frames showcasing some simple, inexpensive art prints.
This pretty rattan chest is the perfect place to store extra blankets, and the vase and flowers add simple pops of color.
Finally, to complete the space, we hung prints of the beautiful kiddos who get to enjoy it. Eventually, a photo of their pup will join them.
It was so much fun to give this beautiful family a fun, relaxing space they will enjoy for years to come.
Would your kids love a room like this? Mine definitely would, and working on this project upped my motivation to beautify my own loft and make it functional for my kiddos to enjoy.
